Why Study China in 2026?
China is the world's second-largest economy, home to six of the world's ten most valuable tech companies, and the destination of choice for an increasing number of UK graduates seeking international career advantage. Yet fewer than 2% of UK university students have any meaningful China experience before graduation — a gap that represents both a challenge and an opportunity.
2026 is arguably the best year in a decade to pursue a China programme. UK passport holders can now enter China visa-free for 30 days. Chinese universities and companies are actively seeking international talent. And the UK government's China strategy explicitly encourages deeper people-to-people engagement.
British Council Generation UK Programme
The British Council's Generation UK–China programme is the UK government's flagship initiative for sending students and graduates to China. Working primarily through CRCC Asia, the programme subsidises internships of 8–12 weeks in Beijing, Shanghai, or Shenzhen for eligible UK students.
Eligibility: Full-time undergraduate students at any UK university. No Mandarin requirement. Applications typically open in January for summer placements.
Funding: The British Council subsidy covers a significant portion of programme costs, making this one of the most affordable structured China experiences available. Students typically pay £800–1,500 after subsidy.
University-Specific China Programmes
- University of Birmingham: The China Internship Programme (Shanghai) offers structured summer internships with pre-departure language training.
- Queen Mary University of London: The Study China Programme provides a three-week summer school at leading Chinese universities.
- University of Edinburgh: Confucius Institute partnerships enable language study and cultural exchange programmes.
- UCL: The IOE Study China Programme offers short-term experiences for education students.
NEXUS CHINA: The Elite Programme Option
For students from G5 universities who want professional-grade China experience rather than a study tour, NEXUS CHINA offers direct access to China's top companies, structured mentorship from senior executives, and a cohort of equally high-calibre peers.
- Business & Culture (£2,500, 2 weeks): Company visits to ByteDance, Alibaba, and leading Chinese VC firms, plus cultural immersion.
- Tech Innovation (£3,500, 3 weeks): Hands-on workshops with Chinese tech teams, AI lab visits, and deep dives into China's tech ecosystem.
- Bespoke: Custom programmes for specific career objectives.
